Home Galesburg is a community-driven nonprofit working to address homelessness and housing instability in Galesburg and Knox County.
We focus on the obstacles that keep people from finding or maintaining stable housing, whether that's transportation, security deposits, missing identification, employment-related expenses, or other essential needs.
Our approach is simple: connect people with existing resources first, identify where help is falling short, and develop practical ways to fill those gaps.

Home Galesburg is focusing on practical needs that can make the difference between remaining homeless, finding stable housing, or keeping the housing someone already has. Our initial priorities include transportation, housing-related expenses, and other barriers that existing programs may not be able to address.
Transportation
Reliable transportation is essential for employment, medical appointments, accessing services, and maintaining stable housing. For people experiencing homelessness or financial hardship, limited transportation options can create significant barriers.
Home Galesburg is working to address these challenges through two approaches. First, we're developing individual assistance for needs such as bus passes, transportation to work or medical appointments, and other essential trips when existing resources fall short.
We're also exploring broader improvements to Galesburg's public transportation system, including the possibility of fare-free fixed-route bus service.
Our goal is to strengthen existing transportation resources, improve accessibility, and help ensure that a lack of transportation doesn't prevent people from moving forward.
Community Involvement
Home Galesburg was built on the belief that meaningful change starts with people coming together. We bring residents, businesses, local organizations, service providers, and people with firsthand experience of homelessness together to identify problems and develop realistic solutions.
Through public meetings, community workgroups, and partnerships, we're working to better understand where services fall short and what can be done to improve them.
Community members can participate by sharing experiences, volunteering, joining workgroups, helping research local resources, or supporting our projects. You don't need special qualifications or experience to get involved. We want people who care about making Galesburg a better place for everyone.

Housing Support
Finding and maintaining stable housing can be difficult when unexpected expenses or practical obstacles stand in the way. Security deposits, move-in costs, missing identification, and financial emergencies can prevent individuals and families from securing or keeping a home.
Home Galesburg is developing assistance programs to help address these barriers, particularly when existing organizations cannot meet someone's needs. Potential assistance includes security deposits, essential move-in expenses, and limited emergency support to prevent housing loss.
Our goal is not to operate housing or duplicate existing programs, but to work with local organizations to fill gaps and help people obtain and maintain stable housing.
Sometimes a relatively small expense can create a major obstacle for someone trying to get back on their feet. Home Galesburg is developing ways to help individuals and families address essential needs that existing assistance programs may not cover.
Potential assistance includes personal hygiene supplies, weather-appropriate clothing, laundry expenses, identification documents, work boots or tools needed for employment, and other necessities that can affect someone's health, safety, or ability to become self-sufficient.
We also recognize that emergencies don't always happen during regular business hours. Our longer-term goal is to develop a process for responding to urgent situations, including temporary shelter needs or other circumstances where immediate assistance could prevent a situation from becoming worse.
Whenever possible, we'll connect people with existing community resources before using Home Galesburg funds. Assistance will be considered based on individual circumstances, available funding, and the urgency of the need.
Our goal is to address the smaller, often overlooked obstacles that can make a significant difference in someone's ability to move forward.
